Tricks of the trade - The Face of the Future:
Websites used:
http://www.intelligentnutrients.com/
. Reliable
http://www.myhairprint.com/
. This website was very informational and reliable. I actually sent the link to my mom because I thought she would be interested in it.
http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/Labeling/Claims/ucm203078.htm
. Reliable website with many facts and regulated by the government.
http://www.motherdirt.com/rethink-clean
. Reliable
https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2015/nov/30/cosmetics-beauty-green-eco-labeling-toxic-ewg
The information seemed very reliable and agreed with everything that I have learned so far. Although they did have ads but the ads were for mother dirt.
https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/shop/story/green-beauty-routine-popular-product-picks-57798974
This article had a lot of information, however all the products they recommended should be checked to make sure they are actually green because they could be getting paid to advertise certain products.
http://chemicalspolicy.org/home.php
. Very reliable and informational.
https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-24551945
. I used this link to learn more about what is in Botox and it was very surprising how dangerous it really is. The article seemed reliable however one should fact check it against a medial source to make sure all the information is accurate.
Boston and other research
The new silent sprint app I looked at has a similar idea to many of the other apps, one can scan a barcode and find out more about the item, but they can also make a personalized guide to what beauty products you want to use, and it is more of an overview and gives tips.
Green chemistry incorporates chemistry and chemical engineering to create chemical products and processes that reduce all hazardous substances while producing high quality products.
The DFE program works in partnership with a broad range of people and businesses to reduce risk to people and the environment by prevention pollution
Both the Guardian and Good Morning America talked about the use of greener products.
This article talked about how people were more interested in greener beauty products because of their overall greener lifestyles. It then listed some links to cleaner products.
The Guardian article talked about the Environmental working group and the Skin Deep Database, it also showcased Mother Dirt products.
At Simmons students could come together and host an activity where they made their own organic materials.
Credo and Follain are two stores that people could go to for beauty products in Boston.
I found a salon in Boston that said they were all natural and performed organic waxing and facials. The salon is called Balans.
There are many places all over Boston where people can receive Botox and because the story said Botox was frog poison I would be interested in finding out what doctors actually use in Botox and if it varies based on where you go.
Online research:
http://www.intelligentnutrients.com/
Right away the website says “Serious results, safe chic and plant powered” which catches people's attention. They are different because they are made with plants, the company claims to not only be saving skin but also the planet.
The products are very expensive, the first four products that I looked at were all above 70 dollars. In boston the products are sold at follain. I would try the PURELUXE replenishing shampoo because the product that I bought for this class a few weeks ago dried my hair out. But they are not actually 100% natural for all products the website said “ Minimum of 80% naturally derived ingredients from plants with the exact % listed on back of pack”
Avalon says that their products are deep rooted in organic substances, has many certifications and the about page has more information then the Intelligent nutrients page. Much cheaper but you had to go through a third party seller to purchase the items.
www.drbronner.com
Labels on the products were: Non GMO project verified, USDA organic, Not animal tested.
Company was not just interested in safe ingredients but also many other aspects such as being fair to suppliers and not producing a lot of waste.
http://www.myhairprint.com/
Hairprint restores the natural pigment to your hair, during a hairprint treatment new eumelanin is synthesized within the cortex of the hair which is a naturally occurring process. The eumelanin molecules pack into the hair shaft and turn the correct color.
http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/Labeling/Claims/ucm203078.htm
The FDA does not define the word organic however the term organic is regulated by the National Organic Program, they have a definition of organic that the product must meet and they also have ingredient standards.
I think its interesting that products labeled with the term organic does not necessarily mean they are safer. Website provided an example about plants, (yes the product might contain plants but the plants might of been treated with things that are toxic)

According to mother dirt for many years there was an ammonia oxidizing bacteria that lived on our skin but gradually our lifestyles and personal care products removed it. The AOB consumes sweat on your skin and according to mother nature they have a live culture the restores balance and clarity to the skin. I would try the product because of how well the company works with their consumers and likes the feedback. On the reviews they only had one negative comment and they contacted her.

Homemade options are definitely cheaper than store bought products, I looked up a facial scrub that cost 14 dollars to make and only had four ingredients. The site recommended that you only make a small amount to ensure that it does not go bad before it is used.
The book
Chapter 8:
US cosmetics trade industry association did not want the california safe cosmetic acts to be passed.
One participant from a focus group said “ I’d rather roll the dice than walk around with my arm pits stinking” I think this is valid but it is much more serious than this, they can have a deodorant that is better for them that does not make them stink.
The CTFA members all signed something called the “Consumer Commitment Code” which makes it seem too consumers that they are honest and reliable but in reality they still do not have to follow strict guidelines.
Pamela Bailey said that the CTFA’s plan was to enable companies to have their own agenda, I think this proves that it is unregulated.
Chapter 9:
At the HBA Regulatory Summit the first speaker only talked about nutrient deficiencies and that they were the cause of cancer. The second speaker said that all cosmetic ingredients are chemicals another word for ingredient is chemical. The next talked about the differences between the United States and Europe.
“Cosmetics are the safest product the FDA regulates and thats why they are the least regulated.” This statement made me angry because I know it is not true.
Consumer commitment code: members sign the code (if they want) inform the FDA of any serious complications, keep a summary of information about the product that is available to the FDA.
Chapter 10:
Horst believed that cosmetics should be safe enough to eat, he worked with food scientists because they were better than chemists at finding natural products. He wanted to keep his new company Intelligent Nutrients small and not sell out to the larger company.
Constructive capitalism = where you share the profit with the workers and the earth which you made it
Three waves of reform, 1 cleaning up food ingredients, 2 taking dangerous chemicals out of agriculture products, 3 taking dangerous chemicals out of skin care products.
Chapter 11:
Wow I never even thought of glue that holds cabinets together, there are so many other things people do not think about.
Of all the chemical products in the universe about 10% are benign and non toxic, 90% have hazardous consequences.
Biomimicry = the imitation of biological organisms
Spent roughly 8 hours.
I was interested in looking at what products one might want in their skin care routine other than what not to want. All the websites that I found talked about greener skin care but only talked about what NOT to want in skin care such as fragrance.
