DIENCEPHALON
THALAMUS
Oval structure above midbrain, 80% total mass of diencephalon
Pair of oval masses, mostly gray matter, organized into nuclei that form lateral walls of third ventrical - joined by gray matter called intermediate mass
Nuclei within thalamus relay all sensory input to cerebral cortex - Hearing (medial geniculate) Vision (Lateral Geniculate) Taste and Somatic Sensations such as Touch, Pressure, Vibration, Heat, Cold, Pain (Ventral Posterior Nuclei)
Other Nuclei are synapses in the Somatic Motor System - Voluntary Motor Actions and Arousal (Ventral Lateral and Ventral Anterior Nuclei) Emotion and Memory (Anterior Nucleus)
HYPOTHALAMUS
-
-
SUPRAOPTIC REGION - above optic chasm (crossing point of optic nerves) and anterior to tuberal region.
Contains nerve fibers that extend from paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei to form supraopticphypophyseal tract - extends into infundibulum to the posterior pituitary
