How to Identify and Help Struggling Students in the Classroom

Teacher Observations Teacher notices signs of special educational needs such as focus or behavioural problems, sustained poor academic performance or social difficulties. Through interaction in class, the teacher may see a repeated behaviour of some concern that raises a flag.

- Gathering Data and Informing Counselor
Teacher completes the SOC (Student Of Concern) Form in partnership with the LS or EAL Specialist based on data and current observations.
Teacher gathers feedback from all of the student's teachers, (Art, PE, Music, IT etc) and inputs into the SOC Form.
Teacher sends the SOC Form to the appropriate grade leveled counselor and once reviewed the counselor arranges a meeting with the teacher team.

- Brainstorm With the Teaching Team
The team (classroom teacher, learning support and EAL specialist and counselor) meets to talk about student learning and performance as well as how to help.
