CONCEPT MAP OF THE 2008 SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE
CAUSES
The Indo-Australian plate moving north and the Eurasian plate moving south causes the two plates to get stuck and build strain energy. When one of the plates slipped, all the strain energy was released, and the earthquake was the result.
Scientists and geologists also think the Zipingpu Dam, built only 5 kilometers away from the epicentre, may have caused extreme pressure on the land below, which may have caused one of the plates to slip.
EFFECTS
ENVIRONMENTAL: The strain energy released an earthquake, and at the city of Sichuan was heavily battered. SOCIAL:Over 84,000 people were killed, and almost 4.8 million people were left homeless.
ENVIRONMENTAL: After the major earthquake, aftershocks continued to rock the city of ChengDu, causing further damage. Many landslides happened and 'quake lakes' were formed.
ECONOMIC: The estimated cost of the earthquake was at about 148 billion USD.
RESPONSES
For the first tine in recent history, China had to call for international help, and the Red Cross.
CONCEPT MAP OF THE 1994 NORTHRIDGE EARTHQUAKE
EFFECT
ENVIRONMENTAL: The strain energy released a 6.7 magnitude earthquake, at about 4:30 in the morning. SOCIAL: 57 people were killed in this earthquake.
ECONOMIC: The damage was estimated at more than 20 billion USD, and thousands more injured.
CAUSE
This earthquake was caused by an undocumented blind thrust fault, which means the fault line never reached the surface.
The earthquake was caused by the North-American plate and the Pacific plate. However, the Pacific plate is sliding at a faster pace than the North-American plate, and the friction between the plates causes strain energy.
The earthquake happened on a federal holiday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) and in the early morning hours so it dramatically reduced the number of casualties.
RESPONSE
After the earthquake, the majority of insurance companies stopped offering insurance as they now had to cover earthquake coverage.
