Respiration
Compartments of thorax
-
Mediastinum
-
Inferior
-
-
Posterior
big vessels, aorta, trachea, bronchi splitting
-
Pleura
-
Parietal: lines ribcage, covers upper surface of diaphragm
-
-
Functioning
-
-
Filters, protects respiratory surfaces from pathogens
-
Parts
-
Lower
-
-
-
-
-
Airway epithelium
-
Single cell layer, nuclei at diff levels, X all reach lumen
-
-
-
-
Complications
Pneumothorax
Air rushing into space, injuries to chest wall, let air enter intrapleural space, collapsed lung on same side as injury, surface tension, recoil of elastic fibres cause lung to collapse
Haemothorax
blood rushing in, rupture
-
Breathing
Steps
Quiet breathing
-
Thoracic cavity increases, lungs expand
-
Alveolar pressure decreases. Elastic recoil, surface tension in alveoli pulls inwards
Normal quiet expiration, diaphragm relaxes
-
-
Forced breathing
Forced inspiration: Accessory muscles assist external intercostal muscles to elevate ribs, enlarge thorax , sternocleidomastoid, scalenes, pectoralis minor contract
Forced expiraton internal intercostal muscles, traversus thoracis depress ribs
Thoracic cavity increases, lungs expand
-
-
-
Abdominal muscles (external, internal obliques, transversus abdominis, rectus abdominis) compress abdominal contents, reduce vol thoracic cavity
-
Shallow breathing
External intercostal muscles contract, elevate ribs, enlarge thoracic cavity
