A 23 year old male patient demonstrating severe face and muscle spasms was brought to the emergency room by his brother. The patient is infected with Clostridium tetani.

Clostridium tetani is producing tetanolysin, which causes local tissue destruction. It is also producing tetanospasmin, which causes clinical tetanus.
Tetanus toxins initially bind at the presynaptic terminals of the neuromuscular junction. As it moves through the nervous system, it inactivates inhibitory neurotransmissions.
