Max and Millie Training Plan
Jumping
Stay Calm at Door
Create distance between dog and the front door, as much distance as necessary for you to regain control. You dog is at a teachable distance when they can respond to a command or treat. If unable to give attention they are past their threshold of learning and need more distance from distraction
Not Jumping on new person once they've entered
Reinforcement: No one gives dog ANY attention until 4 paws are on the ground. As soon as paws hit the ground, get excited. When the jump up, turn around and cease excitement
Body Blocking: Use your body to physically intercept dog and new person. Regain control of the situation by asking for a sit and stay, then slowly give your dog more access to the person if and only if they are under control
Pre Req's
Sit/ Stay Command with release word
Meaty, Tasty Treats
Previously exercised/ mental stimulation
Education
A jumping dog means they have not been taught how to manage excitement. Pet parents responsibility to teach this so that dogs may be welcome to engage with others
The more you celebrate their improvement, the more your dog will remember how to make you happy next time
Practice games are the tutoring and real scenarios are the test. Don't send your dog straight to the test without any practice!
Exercise your dog before guests arrive. Place them in a separate room and bring them to greet guests slowly, practicing sit and stay along the way. The best time to correct unwated behavior is to prevent it before it occurs
Dog is NOT trying to display dominance over you
Must be patient and kind, training sessions should be planned for a not rush.
Extra Practice: Games that will strenghten impulse control muscle
Stay while (insert other exciting thing)
Leave it
Slowly reach to pet
Play exciting game and ask to sit and stay at random (Chase, fetch, etc).
