"
In the case of the François Vase, Klei-tias, not surprisingly, does something unusual. He borrows Corinthian motifs of hunt and animal friez-es, but inserts and multiplies miniaturist friezes with mythological themes between them. By repeating the sphinxes in the two registers – Calydonian Boar Hunt above and animal hunts below – the artist in-vites the viewer to draw a thematic parallel between the two types of hunting: the brutal animal hunt, and the more controlled but no less violent heroic hunt of humans, which, in fact, likens the brave hunters to the regal felines below, not unlike Homeric war-riors, who are likened to lions hunting prey." 3, 159
