STORIES BEHIND DISNEY CLASSICS :crown:
SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS :apple:
Source One and Two
Inspiration for the film comes from the Grimms' Fairy Tales
Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm
German Brothers
Original story is "Little Snow-White"
The film remained true to the tale of an evil stepmother that attempts to have Snow White killed because she is envious of her looks. However, her attempt is flawed and Snow White ends up living with seven dwarfs. Masked as an old lady, the stepmother attempts to feed Snow White a poisoned apple however a dashing prince saves the day.
The brothers did not invent the tales, instead they compiled folklores
In the Grimm Brothers interpretation, the stepmother commits to further attempts of slaughtering Snow White. In one of the instances, in disguise, she hands the princess a poisonous comb and in the other scenario she pulls Snow White's corset so tight that she passes out.
It is believed the story dates back to the Middle Ages
There is no mention of Grumpy or Dopey in the Grimm Brother's interpretation

THE LITTLE MERMAID:shell:
Source One and Three
Original fairytale was written by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson in 1837.
The original text is a tad more gruesome than the Disney interpretation for Ariel is forced to sacrifice her tongue as supposed to just her voice. Moreover, when she is able to walk it feel feels as though she is stepping on blades.
Also, the ending is not quite as happy for once the prince falls in love with a woman from the neighbouring village, Ariel is conjured into sea foam by the sea witch.
However, she does not disappear instead she becomes an ethereal spirit (the daughter of air) and redeems her chance to regain a soul by doing good for man for the next 300 years.

Tiana's Character
Disney took inspiration from a real New Orleans chef called
Leah Chase
. Chase cooked Creole food and served during her career Martin Luther King Sr and Barack Obama.
Mrs Chase inspired the first African-American princess in a Disney movie.
Leah Lange was born in Madisonville, a small town. Her hometown had no schools for African-Americans past sixth grade thus she was sent to live with an aunt in New Orleans.
Many young women sought her advice at her restaurant to which she would respond "you have to look like a girl, act like a lady, think like a man and work like a dog.” In the movie, Tiana upholds the same message stating "The only way that you can get what you want in this world is through hard work."
The Frog Prince
Original tale by yet again the Grimm brothers.
The frog initially pesters the princess to such an extent that she throws him across the wall. However, much to her surprise the effect of this is that the frog transforms into a prince. They live happily ever after.

Aladdin is simply one tale of 1,001 that features in the centuries old 'The Arabian Nights.'
In the text which acts as inspiration, the heroine Scherherazade, weds a brutal king who slaughters his wives one day after marrying them.
In order to save her life, she tells a story every night (one being Aladdin) yet leaves her husband with no ending, forcing his curiosity to spare her life for another night.
Other tales of hers include Sinbad the Sailor and Ali Baba.
Unlike the Disney interpretation, Aladdin lives with his poor widowed mother.
In the original text two genies exist, one inhabits a lamp (like in the Disney film) the other a magical ring. Both genies aid Aladdin throughout the story.

Maui is a key figure in the story of creation in Hawaii, Polynesia, Tahiti and elsewhere. Maui was thought to have formed islands by drawing them up with his fish hook. He tamed the sun, using his sister's hair which acted as a lasso, and then reasoned with it to give long days in Summer and short days in the Winter.
In myths, Maui is depicted as a slim teenager who comes of age however in the Disney interpretation Maui is presented with a broad, muscular figure.
