Direct Characterization
Her skin was a rich black that would have peeled like a plum if snagged, but then no one would have thought of getting close enough to Mrs. Flowers to ruffl her dress, let alone snag her skin.

Motivation
Inspired by
She said that I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, wer more educated and even more intelligant than college professors. She encouraged me to listen carefully to what contry people called mother wit. That in those homeley sayings was couched the collective wisdom of generations
She doesn't care about status. This also makes Maya feel proud of her culture or it shows how Mrs. Flowers can see the good in everything. Also, she believes everyone can and should be learning.
My Conclusion
The book directly says that Maya was very influenced by Mrs. FLowers. "All I cared about was that she had made tea cookies for me and read to me from her fvorite book" page 101. This is very important at this time because Maya feels lonely and was abused by another adult in her life. When I think about Mrs. Flowers as a mentor, I think she is very encouraging and a very excellent teacher. She shows Maya her potential, doesn't force her, and even makes Maya feel a new type of proudness from being able to appreciate books and reading. She is a little different from Momma, who is strict and hurts Maya. Mrs. Flowers is like what Maya can grow up to be.
