Shingles
occur following reactivation of virus
lesions localized to nerve affected
pain may last after lesions are gone
Varicella zoster virus (VZV) cause the disease
spread from respiratory tract to skin via blood
infect dermal cells
Virus becomes latent in nerve ganglia
90% of children got the disease before the vaccine
15-20% after getting chickenpox get shingles
Risk for shingles rises as you age
Herpes
slow spreading lesions
recurrence of lesions is common
caused by human herpesviruses 1 and 2
painful lesions caused by inflammation or cell death
spread by mouth/genitals
herpes infection not deadly in adults
neonatal infection can be fatal
HCW wear gloves to limit exposure
Chicken Pox
highly contagious
lesions spread across body
virus becomes latent
Usually mild disease
Poxyviruses

this virus causes chicken pox

monkey pox cases have increased

spread through direct contact mostly
Warts
benign growths on skin

warts develop months after infection
most are harmless
various techniques to remove them
