Liverpool: Why is it an important city in the UK & Globally
Geographical Location
Liverpool, city and seaport, northwestern England, forms the nucleus of the metropolitan county of Merseyside in the historic county of Lancashire. The city forms an irregular crescent along the north shore of the Mersey estuary a few miles from the Irish Sea. The docklands and several areas of the historic centre of the city collectively were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.
It grew into a major port city following the Industrial Revolution
It was unfortunately also a major slave trading post of the Atlantic slave trading operation
It was also the port of registry of the famous RMS Titanic, which sunk on its way from Southampton to New York. It also has a few White Star ocean liners -The Queen Mary and the Olympic to name a few.
Culture
Known as a cultural hub. In 2008, it held the title of “European Capital of Culture”. It is the home of several UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Guinness Book of World Records labelled Liverpool “The World Capital City of Pop” due to the emergence of several notable musical groups emerging out of the city during the Merseybeat era. (The most notable and famous group being the
Beatles
).
Being the birthplace of arguably the world’s greatest ever musical group, Liverpool has become a major tourist destination.
Music education development is important in the city. The city’s music hub has worked to ensure that every schoolchild has an opportunity to learn or access a musical instrument. Liverpool has more choices than anywhere else in the world with the three universities and the
Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA).
Liverpool boasts beautiful city halls both which are hugely popular locations for
film and production companies
-the Liverpool Film Office is on hand to help for any production enquiries.
Over the past 10 years the office has attracted over £100m of inward investment into the local economy from large scale feature film and highend TV drama. (
It generates economic impact of approximately £11.5m per year which protects businesses and jobs in the creative, hospitality and retail sectors.

Local initiatives to further develop the film, TV and related industries across the Liverpool City Region including the

Sport
it is the home of two successful Premier League clubs- Everton and Liverpool FC. Everton
Everton has won 9 League, while Liverpool FC has won 18 League titles being the most successful English club in European competitions, having won 3 Europa League titles.
No other English team has won more European trophies.
The city's art scene is diverse and constantly growing.
Located in the iconic Albert Docks
, the Tate Liverpool has become one of the largest and most significant galleries of modern art since it was established in 1988.
