Chapter 19 Lecture 3
SSSS
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome
cells of epidermis separate from underlying tissue
S/S
reddening
spreads over entire body
large blisters with clear fluid
within 2 days skin peels off in sheets
Pathogen/virulence
5% of strains of s. aureus secrete 1 or 2 distinct exfoliative toxins that cause SSSS
Pathogenesis
body restores lost epidermis in 7-10 days
circulation of toxins in blood - toxemia mortality is rare
epidemiology
primarily disease of infants and children under 5
can effect elderly and immunosuppressed
Impetigo
contagious disease
S/S
small flattened red patches on face and limbs
oozing vesicles
puss filled on a red base
break and form thick sticky crust
erysipelas
infection spread to surrounding lymph nodes
pathogen and virulence
bac colonize on the skin
abrasions and cold sores
children affected just below nose
Epidemiology
both staph and strep fomite
children 2-5 most likely nurseries are of concern
