PROTOZOA (Eimeria (Eimeriosis in RABBITS, Eimeriosis in SMALL RUMINANTS,…
PROTOZOA
-
General Characteristics
Major components
-
Cytoplasm
Ectoplasm (outer layer)
In some, may be very dense - "cuticle"
In some protozoa, forms elastic wall - "pellicle"
Endoplasm (inner, gelatinous layer)
Movement organoids
-
Flagella
Filamentous growths with 9 peripherally spaced and one central pair of fibrils coming out of a basal granule (kinetoplast)
Cilia
Short fibrils with a structure similar to flagella; usually many spread diffusely over surface, or in rows
Undulation membrane
Protoplasmic fold, on the edge of which a flagellum (trypanosomes and trichomonas) passes
Apical complex
Device to help some protozoa (Eimeria, Babesia etc.) penetrate host cells; located at front and resembles a spiral spring
-
Reproduction
Asexual
Binary fission
Starts with division of nucleus, then cytoplasm
Budding
Variant of binary fission, typical for yeasts
Nucleus/cytoplasm divide simultaneously; new cell initially smaller, like a pimple
-
-
Sexual
-
Conjugation
Nuclear and cytoplasmic material is exchanged between two ‘conjugates’, after which they continue their own lives
Eukaryote, single-celled organisms
