Language also reflects values, attitudes, and even beliefs. Language is often perceived as powerful when it is used competently; clear, assertive, and direct. People who are assertive and confident in a number of situations, such as a job interview are far more likely to have opportunities open up for them as opposed to people who stammer, thus more often than not closing the doors to opportunities. One's dynamic with another also affects one's perception of the use of language when it comes to power. One's reaction depends on the relationship, such as knowing a student well and in the event the student uses powerless language, one may be more sympathetic and understanding.
