GASTRITIS (Diagnosis ((Liver and kidney function tests), Pregnancy test,…
GASTRITIS
Diagnosis
Pregnancy test
Stool for blood
Liver and kidney function tests
Gallbladder and pancreatic function tests
Imaging studies
CBC
H Pylori testing (Acute Gastritis, 2019).
Endoscopy
Clinical Presentation
presence of previous mucosal injury
history of eating raw fish
epigastric tenderness
exposure to potentially noxious drugs or chemical agents
Nausea/vomiting
routine use of NSAIDS (Acute Gastritis, 2019).
Gnawing/burning epigastric distress
Epidemiology
6.3 per 100,000 population for eosinophilic gastritis and 3.3 per 100,000 population for eosinophilic colitis
Women affected more often (Acute Gastritis, 2019).
Incidence of H Pylori infection increases with age
Mortality/morbidity is dependent on the etiology
Pathophysiology
Can be caused by certain drugs, alcohol, bile, ischemia, bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, acute stress, radiation, allergy/food poisoning, and direct trauma (Acute Gastritis, 2019).
Chronic gastritis causes "chronic inflammation, mucosal atrophy, and epithelial metaplasia" (Huether & McCance, 2017).
Inflammatory disorder of the gastric mucosa (Huether & McCance, 2017).
Treatment
Depends on the cause (ie. H Pylori)
IV fluids and electrolyte replacement
discontinue drugs known to cause gastritis (NSAIDS) (Acute Gastritis, 2019).
