English Learning Outcome 5
Different strategies for different skills
Reading
Learners may be presented with a passage of text or a full body of text, depending on their grade-level or the measure itself. They are required to read the full text or part thereof and answer questions based on what they read to demonstrate their understanding of the passage.
writing
Learners are given specific writing tasks in order to evaluate their competency at various levels, ranging from guided question-answer format to longer paragraph, letter and essay-format tasks. Success is assessed according to corresponding tools that assess for various levels of competency from understanding meaning, to utilising proper structure.
presenting
Learners are provided with brief, clear and unambiguous instructions regarding presentations to be given. They should be allowed adequate time to preparefor presentations and assessment measures should be designed to assess aspects of competency, such as an observable introduction, body and conclusion. Measures mayalso assess preparedness and aspects of physical presentation, such as body language
Viewing
Similar to reading comprehension and listening skills, viewing assessments require the learner to interact with visual stimulus in the form of videographic content or pictorial content and respond to assessments based on the viewing content. They may be asked to watch a short video, paying close attention, and be required to answer a set list of questions about it or perhaps summarise the content accurately.
Structures and conventions
Learners are required to demonstrate competency inthe structures and conventions of language by noting the parts of speech and language and how they are utilised in conventional expression of the language. As such, learners will need to display competency in the definition and usage of such aspects as verbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositions, adverbs and so forth. Measures can possibly take the form of reading comprehension tasks in which the learners are required to identify or correct the uses of some of these structures.
listening
Listening assessment usually resemble reading comprehension assessments although instead of a written passage to be responded to, learners are presented either with an oral recitation by the educator or a digital recording of a narrated text. The learner is then required to respond to questions that address various levels of literal of comprehension or recall
