Analogy of Proportion is based on the notion that if something is true of a given person, then it is possible to be more true of another. If you are good, but your friend is better at athletics, you can say she is 2X, 3X better than you are. This is because there is a proportional relationship between all things. E.g God has life, humans have life and plants have life. We understand plants as being alive in a sense, but that doesn't compare to how we define ourselves as alive. Similarly, God's life is greater than ours; all things must be understood in proportion to each other. Aquinas taught that when religious believers talk about God, they are able to do so meaningful as the terms that can be applied to God (good, creator, loving etc) may also be applied to humans and be understood by humans because humans experience these same characteristics, but in proportion to how God has them. Humans experience love, but God is love. God's love is greater than human love because God is the cause of human love. In the same way, if you are just, we can say that God is proportionately more just than you are. The effects resemble the cause, so the concepts are different but related as we are made in Imago Dei and therefore, human attributes (the effects) are a lesser form of the divine attributes (the cause) as God, as the cause of all attributes, must supersede all the characteristics that arise from His attributes (Aka human characteristics) as effects are lesser than their cause (similar to God as Ens Realissimum). Therefore, we know God's attributes as we see it in ourselves & the world
