Death Penalty - pros and cons
Pros
Convicted killers can't kill again
Convicts that have committed heinous crimes don't get the privileges that a lot of inmates get
No chance of parole
Symbolises justice to many (approx. 55% of US population)
Prevents prisons from becoming overpopulated (barely)
Cons
People can be wrongly convicted/killed for crimes they didn't commit
No concrete evidence that the death penalty deters crime
More expensive than keeping an inmate in prison
Studies show it doesn't bring comfort to victims' family in most cases
Many people on death row have some sort of mental illness that may not be taken into account
Capital punishment case is more time consuming that a life sentence case
It's not the only way to ensure a criminal isn't released (e.g life sentence without chance of parole)
Doesn't deter non-violent crime
Doesn't address the issue of crime
Eliminates the possibility of 'rehabilitation'
Continues cycle of violence
Cruel and ruins dignity
Old-fashioned
