Descriptive Statistics
Vocabularies
-
-
Independence:
two events can be considered independent when the occurrence of one does not affect the probability of the other variable occurring
Association :two variables have an association if knowing the value of one variable helps predict the value of the other variable
-
High-leverage points : a point that has a substantially larger or smaller x-value compared to the other observations
Influential observation : a point, that when removed, changes the relationship between two quantitative variables dramatically
Graphs
-
residual plot : a scatterplot of the residuals plotted against the explanatory variable and is used to determine if a linear model is appropriate for this data
Correlation
Correlation:is a quantifiable measurement of the direction and strength of a linear relationship between two variables
Least-squares regression line : the line that makes the sum of the squared residuals as small as possible. It summarizes the relationship between two quantitative variables if one of the variables helps predict the other variable
R square : tells the proportion of variation in the values of y that can be explained by the values of x
-
Tables
Contigency table : a table that is useful for examining a relationship between categorical variables (can be expressed as frequencies or relative frequencies)
