Necrotizing Fasciitis

Bacteria can destroy soft body tissue which is a condition called “flesh eating bacteria” we call it necrotizing fasciitis
Patients will report a hot intensely painful, sunburn like rash at the site of infection, then go on to develop
Fever, tiredness, and muscle aches.
As tissue is destroyed, blood pressure drops, confusion and ultimately comatose

Pathogenesis
Usual route of transmission for group A streptococcus is from person to person through breaks in the skin.
Epidemiology, Dx, Tx, and Prevention

Necrotizing fasciitis, has been known to develop after surgery, abortion, after an insect bite, or a needle stick.
Diabetes, cancer and chicken pox increases the risk of developing this disease.
Early diagnosis, prompt surgery to remove dead tissue ASAP

Clindamycin and PCN. In one study it had a cure rate of 83% compared to a cure rate of 41% with PCN used alone
