Lesson: Geography- Australian Culture
Children with additional needs
Nicola :explode:
•Sociable
•Good leader
•Poor comprehension
skills.
•Artistic
Aoife :tada:
• Dyslexia,
• Difficulties with
spelling
•Strong verbal skills
• Artistic.
Harry :check:
• Difficulty listening
• Creative
To accommodate these children
• Multiple choices of representation and expression methods found in team or group work would help focus their attention.
• The child I am going to focus on is Nicola as she is very disruptive so keeping her occupied with others in the group will help her to work to her full potential.
• Getting the groups to create a poster might be a good way to get Nicola, Aoife, and Harry to participate and show interest in the lesson.
Representation - Giving the child a choice of reading/images/audio will help to get their attention and focus it positively on the lesson
Multiple choice questions will help the learners engage appropriately at their level in the lesson.

People and Other Lands
👩🏫
Curriculum Objective:
Study some aspects of the environments and lives of people in one location in another part of the world
👩🏫Learning Outcomes:
Explore and consolidate investigation of Australian culture
To allow for multiple forms of engagement
• Play a short audio and visual clip of the Australian anthem
this clip will be a kept to 2 minutes to hold the children's attention
• Display an interactive map on the IWB to allow for discovery learning
•Give out a short reading piece to allow for active learning as the children can talk and discuss the information.
The lesson
Station One
- children will work on creating an image of an animal they might expect to find in Australia. They can use markers colours or play-doh to create their idea. The children may work alone, in pairs or groups to come up with ideas. They will display their ideas on the whiteboard or at the top desk.
Station Two
- short reading piece on the Aborigines. Children will work together in pairs or in a group to answer multiple choice questions
Station three
-Interactive map. children will work together to pinpoint the main landmarks.
The map will give short pieces of information about each landmark.
Conclusion:
the children will work together to write 4/5 interesting points they found throughout the lesson. They will present these to the class.
To assess the children:
:check:
The children can
•create a second representation to place alongside their first attempt showing what they have learned.
•work in groups and create a short presentation about the information they found interesting.
• create a short written/ audio piece explaining their understanding of culture in Australia
•Create a calm environment with space for the children to work in groups.

Pedagogical approaches
To allow for these to work effectively in the classroom the students will need to use the one that works best for them
The approaches I choose to focus on
•Discovery learning
• Active learning
•Learning by listening
UDL principles
I wish to implement these into the lesson through varying the pedagogical approaches for Nicola and other students
A community of learners - group work
Flexibility in use
Perceptible Information
Critique
The interactive map gives the children a chance to engage through visual and kinesthetic means of representation
Not all students will be actively participating and learning at all stations due to different means of representation engagement and expression.
All children will want to start with the interactive map. This may cause conflict at the beginning of the lesson.
Using an interactive engaging map will get the children involved and initiate their own learning.
For children who may be visually impaired the lesson may have to be adapted to include these children
children with challenging behaviour may cause difficulties as the teacher will be moving between stations and not focused on all children at the same time.
Classroom management would need to be of high quality as the children would have to know exactly what they are doing before let explore in their groups
Rational
The interactive map: This will motivate the children to choose the information they find most interesting to them. It also allows the children to explore the landmarks of Australia in a fun and engaging way.
The reading piece will appeal to many students in the class so grouping the children for this activity allows the stronger reader to read and explain the piece for other students. Getting them to explain to others, helps them to make sense of it fully and retain the information.
By using the IWB the children are automatically engaged as they get to come up to the front of the room and be like the teacher.
