Major Component: .44-2.56% Alkaloids with Ephedrine - 85% of which is pseudoephedrine
Small amount of saponins, catechins, tannins
Therapeutic Actions and Uses
Expectorant
Bronchiodilator
Adrenergic - excites SNS, depresses smooth muscle and cardiac muscle
Similar effect to Epinephrine, however it is not changed in the digestive system and the effect is longer
Vasoconstrictor
Increase blood pressure
Tonic
Nervine
Sedative
Other uses: Malaria, fevers, rhinitis, asthma, hayfever, emphysema, epilepsy, nocturnal enuresis, myasthenia gravis
Toxicity
Do not use in cases of severe asthma
Do not use in cases of high blood pressure or heart problems
Abuse can cause: insomnia, motor disturbances, high blood pressure, glaucoma, impaired cerebral circulation, urinary disturbances, cardiac infarction, death
antidote to toxicity is 15gms of licorice root
