A Thousand Splendid Suns
Quotes/Reflections
"Like a compass needle that
points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman."
This shows that the men think that it is always women's fault or that it is easy to blame stuff on them.
-
"You are now husband and wife," the mullah said."Tabreek. Congratulations."
-

"You know nothing, do you? You're like a
child. Your brain is empty. There is no information in it."
This again shows Rasheeds anger towards Mariam. At this point I think that Rasheed sees not worth of being married to Mariam.
"Good," Rasheed said. His cheeks were quivering. "Now you know what your rice tastes
like. Now you know what you've given me in this marriage. Bad food, and nothing else."
This shows that the most is expected from the women at this time. Men get mad if women do one thing wrong even though they do a lot of stuff wrong too.
"Let me marry you, Laila. Today. We could get married today." Chapter 25, Page 117
This shows how much Tariq loves Laila. Tariq also may want Laila to be safe because of the civil war happening in Afghanistan.
"How long is she staying?" she asked Rasheed. "Until she is better. Look at her. She's in no shape to go. Poor thing." Chapter 27 Page 134
I think that it is a coincidence that Rasheed and Mariam found Laila. Laila is very lucky, but I guess this is just to develop the plot.
"I'd just as soon as we get it done." Rasheed's mouth opened, then spread in a yellow, toothy grin. "Eager" he said. Chapter 30 Page 134
This is where Rasheed grabs her throat because she won't put on the ring. I feel like Rasheed now has an anger problem that is getting out of hand and further developing the plot.
"We're leaving this spring, Aziza and I. Come with us, Mariam." Hosseini Chapter 35 Page 154
This shows the deflation between their arguments. They are now friends and are rebelling against Rasheed.
"And, with that, he left the room. But not before delivering a kick to the flank that would
have Laila pissing blood for days." Hosseini Chapter 36 Page 163
I don't get why he does this bad stuff. Like in these days in the world Rasheed would be thrown in jail for a long time, even if it wasn't towards a women.
"You will not, under any circumstance, show your face. You will cover with burqa when
outside. If you do not, you will be severely beaten."..."You will not laugh in public. If you do, you will be beaten. You will not paint your nails. If you do, you will lose a finger." Hosseini Chapter 37 Page 166
This is when the Taliban is passing new laws. This is very corrupt and not fair to women, like they are like slaves, if they do anything out of order, they will get beat.
"He was lying on his back, staring at nothing with an unblinking, fish mouthed expression. A bit of foam, lightly pink, had dribbled from his mouth down his cheek." Hosseini Page 212
I think that Rasheed deserved this to happen to him. But I did think that something was going to happen with the gun in Rasheed's drawer.
"Kneel here, hamshira And look down."One last time, Mariam did as she was told. Hosseini Page 225
I feel like Mariam deserved better and she didn't have to go out like this. She was always controlled and manipulated and couldn't fight back.
"Because if it's a girl, Laila has already named her." Hosseini Page 251
I like how she decided to name the kid after Mariam because she deserves it. She was never respected and this right here will probably be the most respect she has ever gotten.

Why does Mariam volunteer to stay back and not go with Laila to live with Tariq? If I were Mariam, I would also try to escape.
Final Thoughts
-
My final thought is that Mariam deserved more than she received in the book because she even died at the end and I thought she was going to escape and live happy, Mariam didn't really have a good life, she suffered and ended up unfortunately dead at the end of the novel.
