So some background information on Colin Kaepernick...he was in the NFL and was a quarter-back for the 49ers + he was a social justice activist as well.
His silent protests activated two bases, first it fired up people who claimed he was disrespecting the American flag and those who served in the military. Second, “it rallied those who saw a need to defend the First Amendment right to expression through peaceful protest. “
-
Because of this, an important question came up…”Why would Nike take a gamble on its 30th anniversary ad with so much heat surrounding Colin Kaepernick?
-
They had thought Colin Kaepernick was the best candidate for being the face of their ad because of all the things Colin was doing to protest against racial injustice and police brutality. Colin was exactly what Nike was looking for, he was born bi racial however he was adopted and raised by two white parents. Since he has a personal believable investment in the entire purpose of the ad, therefore Nike chose him to be in the ad as well as narrate the entire thing giving him a voice.
Apart from all the good qualities Kaepernick displayed, this was a perfect chance for Nike to cement its values, such as never giving up, rising to the challenge and sacrificing for the greater good and serving a purpose
