Access
in 2013 people with disabilities were able to get their CDL license through the transportation department
there has been cases where needs were not met for the disability community due to not providing the proper resources to the community but since then improvements have been made
The NAD(National Association of Deaf) advocated for equal access as well as other organizations who fought for disability rights
TVs became available in the 1920s but weren't made accessible for the disability community
Telephones
in 1964 the first telephone receiver amplifier was created for deaf/hard of hearing individuals
early 1900s the deaf community had to rely on the hearing community for direct access with telephones
in 1960 the teletypewriter was developed which was huge for the deaf community it made them accessible to communication with the hearing world
although difficulties with the TTY arised, more resources for the device followed along the way
History behind
people with disabilities were sterilized so they wouldn't be able to have children and were seen as inferior to society
in the 1940s-1950s people with disabilities were place in separate classes away from other students
people with disabilities were often placed into psychiatric wards, hidden and shamed by the hearing world
history starts back as far as the 1800s people with disabilities were treated as if they were less than general population
the disability act (ADA) was signed in 1990 which protected individuals with disabilites banning discrimination against them
Captions
very few programs had captioning available for the deaf community access was very limited
in 1979 NCI the national captioning institute developed a program designed for the deaf community that allowed them to watch shows with captioning available, their company grew more as time went by and more access became available for the deaf community
the first movie made available for the deaf community started in 1972, ABC news was the first show to offer captions
there are two different captions, closed captions and open captions
