Types of Spa (10 types)

1) Day Spa/ City Spa

  • Offers spa treatments, salon & beauty services on a daily basis.
  • Can be located within a shopping mall pr standalone.
  • Usually offers express treatments.
    Example: Esthera Spa, Ikeda Spa, Afond Spa

2) Club Spa

  • A day spa located in a fitness facility or health club.
  • Usually a membership is required to use the facilities.
    Example: EDES Spa in Singapore Swimming Club.

3) Hotel Spa (Located in Urban Areas)

  • Offers similar to day spas complemented with fitness facilities, classes & spa cuisine.
    Example: The Spa, Mandarin Oriental; Banyan Tree, MArina By Sands

4) Resort Spa (Located in Rural Areas)

  • Located within a resort or hotel. Offer spa services, fitness classes & spa cuisine.
  • They tend to offer longer duration spa services and therapies that are inspired by the local wellness traditions or philosophies.
    Example: Banyan Tree Spa, Phuket; Anantara Spa

5) Eco Spa

  • Located within an Eco tourism resort where nature habitats are being respected. Treatments tend to focus on all natural products.
    Example: Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa, Queensland, Australia
    (They emphasize on 3R; Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, they try not to use much electricity)

6) Destination Spa (Wellness Spa)

  • Offers a wide range of services encompass the body, mind ans soul.
  • Stays rangers from 3 days to a month.
  • Wide range of spa therapy & facilities (Eg, Massage and hydrotherapy pools)
  • Mind & Fitness activity ( Eg, Aerobics, Yoga)
  • Lifestyle re-orientation program (Eg, Weight Loass, Detox)
  • Educational Program (Eg, Stress management)

7) Medical Spa

  • Offers treatments that require a doctor's supervision & administration. Treatment time tend to be short with minimal down time.
  • Treatments include Abdominoplasty, Blepharoplasty, Mammoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Photo Rejuvenation, Laser Treatment and Botox injections.
    Example: Sloanne Clinic, Singapore. S Medical Spa, Bangkok, Thailand

8) Mineral Spring Spa/ Thalassotherapy Centre

  • Has natural mineral/ thermal spring that is used for hydrotherapy treatments.
    -Thalassotherapy Centre uses purified sea water for hydrotherapy. It also uses sea-related products. Eg, Seaweeds, algae
    Example: Therm Maine Spa, Ayana Resort Bali

9) Cruise Ship Spa

  • Aboard a cruise ship that provides spa treatments, fitness & wellness components.
    -Keeps people entertain.
  • Spa cuisine is usually available.

10) Airport Spa

  • Located in an Airport & specializes in short treatments aimed at travelers
    -Keeps people entertain. .

Resort Spa VS Destination Spa (Wellness Spa)

Resort Spa:

  • Mostly are Holiday Makers
  • Reason to visit spa are far from wellness.
    -Guests that check-in the resort does not necessary wants to visit the spa.

Destination Spa (Wellness Spa)

  • People that has a goal in mind.
    -To get well/ treated/ to feel better/ happier/ feel good.
  • To detox themselves; shine away from drinking, smoking, oily foods etc
    -These people spend quite longer time; a week to 3 months.
  • They have specialized people to guide them through.
