Sexual Ethics
Old testament beliefs
-
Proverbs 6:23-29 - "Keep you away from the immoral woman", "for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread"
Leviticus 18:22-23, "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.", No Bestaility
Deuteronomy 22:13-30 - very long text about marriage violations.
One quote:
"If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel."
Genesis 38:6-10, long story, pretty much Onan's pull out game was so good that God had to destroy him. Now there is no Onanism, or masturbation.
Church
St Aquinas
Aquinas followed Natural law, which states that one of the primary precepts of man is to reproduce. He states that it is wrong to do what is unnatural, and he believes that to have sex without reproduction is unnatural.
As a result, sex without reproduction is wrong, such as homosexuality, masturbation, Onanism, having sex while sterile etc.
He also suggests the "God given role of semen", he says that semen has a role in reproduction, and if it is wasted or used for any other purpose then this is a sin.
"that every emission of semen, in such a way that generation cannot follow, is contrary to man. And if this be done deliberately, it must be a sin. Summa Theologica."
Paul and Plato
-
Basically the idea is that everything physical and irrational, the bodily desires are wrong and bring the soul down.
Therefore, sex is wrong and it defiles the soul as it is a bodily pleasure.
Plato also believed that a beautiful soul was contained within a beautiful body and that you initially love the body, but then the soul. This is known as platonic love and this view merged with Paul's views
St Jerome
Generally disliked marriage, however he did find one benefit - that it created virgins
Augustine of Hippo
-
Augustine thought that sexual desire had to be tolerated as it was a necessary evil. (for procreation)
A man who loves his wife out of desire, not procreation is an adulterer for his own wife
-
He thought that sexual desire was not controlled by the will. He found evidence in this by the fact that the penis becomes erect autonomously, without the man controlling it.
He thought that the reason we cannot control erections was because of the introduction of pleasure by Eve with the consumption of the fruit
Augustine did emphasise fidelity in marriage, and that we must fulfil our marital duties
Philo of Alexandria

-
-
-
He saw women as objects of pleasure, he got this from Adam and Eve, where eve introduced Adam to the fruit, or pleasure.

New testament
What Jesus said
Matt 5:27-29 - "anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown in hell." - so no porn or strippers
-
Other than this he didn't say much. He never said anything about Gays, he was against prostitution, but he didn't believe in punishing prostitutes. "he who is without sin cast the first stone". He was against divorce.
-
What St Paul said
Rom 1:21-27 - a load of text, basically you cannot be gay. (the pagans are being too gay)
1 Cor 5:1 - apparently there has been sexual immorality within the romans, apparently men who've had their fathers wife should be handed over to Satan.
1 Cor 7:8 - the unmarried should just remain unmarried. But if they cannot control themselves they should marry. No divorce. If your wife is a non-believer, you must not divorce her. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but atm they are holy.
1 Cor 6:9 - "Do you know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters no adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders"
1 Cor 7 - you cannot deny your partner their sexual rights, each person owns the other also.
