Oscar emphasizes how this theme of lending a hand is apparent by noting that “Everyone on that block would help each other. You know, if walls needed to go up, everyone would go and help build those walls.” When Oscar told his friends that because he wasn’t good with paperwork, he’d apply to college the next year, “My friends said no, that’s not gonna happen. I grew up with them, we worked the same fields, went through school together from the first grade. So they reported me to one of the counselors... He [ the counselor] called me in and he said, ‘You’re gonna sit here and you’re not gonna leave this office until you fill out all your college applications and your financial aid forms.”’ The counselor sits with Oscar while he fills out all of the applications and even drives Oscar to the post office to mail them. It is clear that both the counselor and Oscar’s friends happily lend a hand to make sure he can succeed, similar to how everyone helps build the walls and shares food during lunch time. They support each other.
