Later, in his honor, he changed the name of the capital, Chuquisaca, to Sucre. Then came a period of anarchy, in which José Miguel de Velasco, elected 4 times, in the span of 20 years, and Joseph Ballivián (1841-47), who ordered the country, promoted mining and defended Bolivia from the invasion of Peru at the Battle of Ingavi. The policy of the arbitrary and ignorant ruler Mariano Melgarejo (1864-71) resulted in the loss of large territories in the hands of Brazil and Chile, and the War of the Pacific (1879-83) in which Bolivia lost its access to the sea. After that, there was a period of democratic stability, the "oligarchy of conservative freedom" supported by silver and tin.
