The Renaissance
Give some background on the Renaissance, who was involved, when did it take place, where did it happen, why did it happen here, and why is it important?
-
Some important people were the Medici family who were the bank of the church. The Albizzi family had to due with law. Brunelleschi played a big part in architecture and he also built the dome on the church which was left open for many years
Two very important women were Lucrezia Borgia and Isabella d'Este. At the time women didn't have much say in what they did and they were very controlled by men. Lucrezia Borgia was the daughter of Pope Alexander the 6th.Her father used her as political power and forced her into an arranged marriage with Giovanni Sforza when she was 13. He then annulled the marriage once he didn’t need Milan's political support.Isabella d'Este gave public performances, in which she demonstrated her skills at singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. This was important because her performing was her freedom because women didn't have much say in what they did at the time. She was married to Duke of Mantua and She had a great amount of influence over the Mantua court
It started in Florence, Italy. It started here because Florence was on the coast which means there was an abundance of trade.
The Renaissance was the rebirth of a rebirth of Greek and Roman culture. So they went back in time and got the ideas and thoughts of Greek and Roman culture and built and expanded on those ideas. This was the main concept of the Renaissance
Some important writers were William Shakespeare,Geoffrey Chaucer, and Nicholas Machiavelli. There were many more but these were some of the more important ones
The Renaissance was important because it was a rebirth and an expansion of cultural experience. It was also important because it directed society toward more humanist perspectives. Humanism was a very big emphasis during the Renaissance. Humanism focused more on individuals and their ideas and thoughts.
The renaissance is important today us today because without it humans would not have the free thought and free will that we have today. If the renaissance never happened the church would still have power and control over people. The renaissance was important because it was a shift in thoughts to a more humanistic perspective. It was also important because it gave humans more freedom to do what they wanted and not what the church wanted
Explain the role of the Medici family throughout the Renaissance? Who was involved and how did they come to power, and why do they matter?
The Medici family funded a campaign fund for a pirate. That pirate rose the ranks from priest to cardinal and then the bet payed off because that pirate then became the pope therefore the Medici bank became the bank of the church meaning almost all the money went through their bank. This was a huge risk at the time because they bet on this nobody pirate to become pope and at the time the Medici bank wasn't very good so it was a huge risk but it granted a huge reward.
There was a big problem in Florence at the time. It was the dome that hadn't been finished for over 100 years. The Medici family hired Brunelleschi to solve it. The missing piece looked bad and was looming on the people of Florence. Brunelleschi was able to solve this problem using his genius brick method. The citizens of Florence gained an emotional boost knowing that the dome had finally been completed.
Since the Medici family was the bank of the church they had lots of money. At that time many people just sat on their money and didn't do anything with it. However the Medici family patronized artists to create art and architectural projects. The Medici family was important because instead of sitting on their money they were investing in artists and painters to create art and projects. This was important because many artists saw this and went to Florence for the opportunity to get noticed and to show off their talents. This is a big reason the Renaissance got up and moving quickly.
Without the Medici family the renaissance might of never happened or would've taken a lot longer or looked different.I think this because the Medici family spend and put their money back into the community which rapidly expanded the art and without them doing that some of the great art and artists would have never been discovered
Choose a painting from the Renaissance and a painting from the modern-day, compare and contrast your analysis using the three (3) of the five categories of critique. (Please put your two pieces of art in your project.)
Beauty in art. I like this painting for its lively look, The detail in this art piece is so immaculate you almost feel as you are the farmer in the painting. I also like the gloominess in the painting. The artist used dark colors to give it more of a sad/peaceful day.
Skill and Technique: I think that this painting shows that Peter is a very skilled artist, In the painting most everything is 3D and it looks like a scene from real life. The painting also shows excellent perspective, the painting is on a 2D surface but the trees in the back look further away than the man.
Uniqueness: I think this painting is very unique in the fact that is represent the way of life during that time period, For example they couldn't go to the store to get their food they had to go out and gather their own food and water so it is very unique that the artist represented this in the painting.

Beauty in Art: I like this painting because of the style. It's a very cool style it is a portrait but the artist distorted it to make it more interesting. The artist makes the painting. catch your eye more than a regular portrait.
Skill and Technique: Sara is very skilled because it takes a special talent to draw a portrait but the fact that she added her own twist to it made it catch my eye and overall is just a materpiece.
Uniqueness: This painting is very unique in the fact that the artist cut the portrait into different sets of vertical lines to distort the portrait. This is a very unique style and one that I have never seen before.

Explain what humanism is and how does it impact the Renaissance? What are some examples of humanist ideas during the Renaissance? Explain if humanism is around today and provide examples if it is or is not?
Humanism is putting the importance of individuals ideas and thoughts rather than religion or other things. Humanists impacted the renaissance because they played a major role in education. For example humanists created schools to teach their ideas and wrote books all about education. This was also important because at the time the church was what most people believed in and what most people followed and because of humanists, people could have their own ideas and thoughts so they could interpret things how they wanted and not what the church wanted them to believe. Humanism also impacted the renaissance because Secularism happened which means the state and church were separated which means the church had less power.
Some examples of humanist ideas during the Renaissance were: The Prince by Machiavelli which focused on humanism. Another example was the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci which symbolized the ideal human body, geometry, and human potential. Another example was the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This was painted by Michelangelo. It is important because it shows Michelangelo who was a famous artist his appreciation of the human form. Another example was Petrarch and other Humanists believed that human beings could be dramatically changed by education, so they wrote books and created schools to teach their ideas.
I would say humanism is still very around today because there are nonreligious people that still believe that human needs and values are more important than religious beliefs, There are many people believe this therefore I would say humanism is still around today.
There are many major artists, musicians, writers, and poets that came about during the Renaissance. Why was this time period so full of new “artists?” Are we living in a Renaissance today? Why or why not.
The Renaissance was full of art music and poetry. One of the reason was because the Renaissance was a rebirth so they went back in time to see how the ideas and thoughts of the greeks and romans and people began putting these ideas into art. Another reason is because people that believed in humanism were able to do express and do what they wanted and in their free time they were able to express themselves using art.
I would say that today we are still living in a Renaissance. We have still been progressing in art and learning. This progress has been sped up at times or slowed down at times we still continue to learn new things and reflect on the past. In todays world everyone is able to express themselves and what they believe in and these thoughts and ideas are being produced because it is a time of new ideas and new learning.
