Bed bugs bite back - Thanks to Evolution
Part 1
: Battle of the Bugs using DDT
Question 1
When did bed bugs resistance to insecticides first appear?
Failures were first noted in
1947
(in barracks of the Naval Receiving Station at Pearl Harbor)
There were other reports of bed bug resistance to DDT in the next
10 years
(especially in tropical areas)
What does it mean by pesticide resistance?
Pesticides are
no longer effectively kills
a “high” number or percent (>90%) of individuals in the
insect and pest population.
Selection pressure that
able to alter the frequency of resistant and susceptible individuals
in the population.
Lower susceptibility of a pest population to a pesticide
that was efficient against it before (Curutiu
et al
., 2017).
Question 2
How do you think pesticide resistance occured in bed bugs?
Bed bugs have developed defense mechanism involving their outer shell as shield to prevent toxin reaching inner part of body
Bed bugs combine specific gene fragments to develop different types of resistance from pesticides
Should we keep looking for new pesticides that will work instead of the ones we previously used?
Why or why not?
Question 3
How IPM can reduce the problem of pesticide resistance?

: I cannot stand it and I choose to take my life
Question 5

or
worsening
