NATURE VS NURTURE
NATURE
- strong link between genes & intelligence
- Sniekers et all (2017) found DNA sequences of 78,308 people from UK correlated with general intelligence (G) and level of education
- Adopted children don't show same intelligence as adopted parents
HOWEVER, genes dont tell the whole story:
- Genes can so far only explain 5% differences in intelligence
- The effect of genes can change overtime
NURTURE
- Research on identical twins raised apart showed they had less similar IQ scores than identical twins raised together
- Environmental factors all have an effect on genes (malnutrition, neglect, education, etc.)
HOWEVER, there is the issue of stereotype threat
- Steele & Aronson (1995) refer to being at risk of confirming as a self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about ones social group
Therefore, we are a COMPLEX INTERPLAY of both NATURE and NURTURE
