Strength
Types of strength-Tensile strength (to resist stretching or pulling forces. Compression strength (to resist pushing or crushing forces). Shear strength (to resist sliding or cutting forces). Torsional strength (to resist twisting forces).
Applications: Tensile strength- Clothes would need some sort of tensile strength to help resist from ripping (stretching or being pulled to rip). Compression strength- A car, this is to help incase of any crashing. Shear strength-
Hardness
To be able to resist abrasive wear
Eg- Tables, desks, this is to keep them looking aesthetically pleasing. Cast iron is a very hard material. Copper is not a very hard material.
Toughness
To be able to withstand sudden impact
Eg-cars, motorbikes to withstand impact if they was to get into a crash toughness would help with safety of the passengers. Steel and nylon are tough materials. Glass and acrylic are not tough, materials.
Elasticity
to be able to flex and bend
Eg-rubber bands, scuba clothing. Rubber is a very elastic material. Glass is not very elastic.
Plasticity
To be able to be permanently changed by external forces
Acrylic when heated has very good plasticity. Rubber and glass do not have good plasticity.
Ductility
to be able to draw or stretch the material out
Copper, chewing gum and gold are very ductile. Glass rubber and hardened steel are not very ductile
Durability
to be able to withstand wear and tear
e.g.-clothes to last for a long period of time to keep the consumer happy. Nylon is a very durable and is used in bearings on machinery as it wont wear out easily, as well as clothes. Pine is not very durable as it wears away easily
Malleability
to withstand deforming under pressure
Aluminum and steel are very malleable and are used to shape car body panels as they can be shaped very easily. While for example glass is not very malleable as it will crack if you try to reshape it
