Mississippi flood precautions
Soft Engineering:
Pros - It's environmentally friendly, doesn't cost much money or resources, it doesn't disrupt river ecosystems.
Cons - It isn't always effective, can be easily destroyed/dismantled, and require regular maintenance
Artificial Leeves
Pros -They protect communities and provide flood protections, they also don't hurt animals living near rivers
Cons - Levees cause areas beyond it to flood more often, but create high concentrated velocities . They also don't make that big of an impact on the flooding
Sandbags
Pros - Sandbags are cheap and accessible to everyone. They are very use usefull as the sand holds water while the bags keep the water out.
Cons - They are very weak and not a very good way to counter act floods with a lot of force. Water can seep through the area in between bags further reducing it's efficiency.
Aforestation
Cons - It has potential to affect biodiversity and has real opportunity cost
Pros - They help the environment and help prevent soil erosion. The trees soak up water for photosynthesis making them further reducing flood effects.
Hard Engineering: Pros - its more effective than soft engineering, Its stable and can't be disrupted easily.
Cons - It harms the environment, can disrupt river ecosystems and usually costs a lot of money.
Dams & Channels
Cons - Dams release greenhouse gases, and destroy carbon sinks in oceans.
Pros - Dams help in preventing floods. Hydroelectric Power is also made when water passes through a dam.
Reservoirs
Pros: can help store access water preventing the chance of floods. provide access to irrigation and drinking water.
Cons: when it overfills it starts to flood over its banks.to create a reservoir it requires large amount of land so if there is village nearby they have to relocate.it also requires clearing the land
Flood Relief Channels
Cons - They are expensive and can flood too.
Pros - They do not affect the ecosystem as much, and remove excess water from the rivers to reduce the flooding
