Comment on the desirability on the precision in natural sciences and the arts
Natural sciences
Precision is mostly desired
When explaining ideas or theories, scientists do not want to use terms/ jargon that is open to interpretation as it will not convey the exact definition or define the theory precisely if those vocabulary is used.
Names of organs/ organisms must be very defined and precise as it may be used in a surgical level which can lead to life-and-death situations.
In real life examples
Vet internship placement: vet and nurses used a lot of scientific jargon especially when performing surgery. They used precise names for the utensils as well as identifying different parts of the animal that needs to undergo surgery.
The arts
Somewhat desired : depends on the purpose of the author
Desired
Giving instructions or in some specific texts, precise language is much preferred to convey the idealistic meaning of the piece of work.
Not desired
The arts is somewhat enabling our creativity, by using precise jargon it limits the scope of our imagination so it will not reach the main purpose of the author/ artist.
Real life examples: literary arts
Poetry: poets may want to use vague language (esp diction that evoke emotions) to allow readers to have their own interpretation of the poem
Non fiction: main purpose of the passage is to inform not to evoke any emotions or new ideas, so author will use precise diction to ensure that the message is transferred
