Qualitative Analysis
-
-
-
a branch of chemical analysis concerned about the chemical identities of substances
vs quantitative analysis e.g. volumetric analysis, which is about the exact amount of substances.
same 2 reagents used to test for all cations:
- aq sodium hydroxide
- aq ammonia
2 step process:
- add a little, observe for precipitate (ppt)
- add excess, observe if ppt dissolves, and note colour of solution formed
sometimes one reagent is sufficient, but it is possible that both are needed, and even possible that using both is not sufficient, and an additional reagent is necessary to confirm a cation.
