Shapes of Molecules - Coggle Diagram
Shapes of Molecules
what determines the shape of molecule?
number of electron pairs (lone, single bond, doublebond) surrounding central atom determines shape of molecule/ion
electron pairs repel one another so they are far apart as possible
lone pairs repel more than bonded pairs
linear
eg. CO2
2 electron pairs (double bonds)
bond angle= 180
trigonal planar
eg. BCl3
3 electron pairs (single bonds)
bond angle= 120
tetrahedral
eg. CH4
4 electron pairs (single bonds)
bond angle= 109.5
pyrimidal
eg. NH3
4 electron pairs (3 single bonds,1 lone pair)
bond angle= 107
non-linear
eg. H2O
4 electron pairs (2 single bonds, 2 lone pairs)
bond angle= 104.5
octahedral
eg. SF6
6 electron pairs
bond angle= 90
