Monarchy
James 1 and Jacobean era at the time of Shakespeare
James and Elizabeth were both patrons of the theatre
this enable plays to carry on and Shakespeare to be able to write his plays.
Elizabeth could have been a large influence to the character traits of Lady Macbeth (both do not follow historical stereotypes of women).
The Monarchy was very powerful and could execute people if they wanted to (Shakespeare had to please the present monarch).
Equality and status
Men and women were very unequal
Elizabeth 1 was not like this and was a very dominant female figure
If you had money and power, you were respected
society was mainly dominated by the monarchy
Earls, royalty, wealthy land owners and other friends of royalty were the most influential and held the most power.
Soul/heaven/hell
Heaven was somewhere that all people in England aspired to be when they died.
People were extremely scared of being sent to hell and didn't want to commit any sins that could result in them being sent to hell.
Supernatural
People were very scared of supernatural things like witches or changes in weather for example.
Witches were killed if they were found as they were thought to be deadly and from hell.
Religion
Elizabeth 1 was originally protestant but attempted to create a middle way to enable a compromise between Catholicism and Protestantism.
She was excommunicated from the church in 1570.
James 1 was a Catholic
Shakespeare had to cater his plays so they were supportive of the present monarch's religion.
