Pull Factors - adventure, jobs, fertile land in California, propaganda and MANIFEST DESTINY

Journey - followed the Oregon trail, journey took months. Harsh weather and geographical issues (mountains, rivers, etc). Lack of resources, disease, cannibalism.
Gold Miners (49ers)

Costs - People did not make money. Mining towns were a huge source of crime and racism/discrimination.
The reality - The journey was difficult. By the time most got there, there was not enough gold left for everyone.
