Language features
Different text types demand particular use of language. This information lists the type of words that you should be using in constructing the text. You should read the glossary at the end of this section to clarify your understanding of terms used.
Structure
Each piece of writing has a number of parts. Each part of the writing has a specific role in the entire piece. This section of the scaffold gives the outline and order of the parts of a text. A very short and simple example accompanies each explanation to assist you in understanding the expectations of the text type.
Genre
Definition
type of art, literature, or music characterized by a specific form, content, and style
Main genres
- poetry
- drama
- fiction
- non-fiction
Functions
- Major function of genre is to establish a code of behavior between the writers and audience
- keep the readers informed about the topics discussed or the themes presented
- Fiction and dramatic genres help students and writers learn and improve their communication skills
- Poetic genre enhances imaginative and emotional power of the readers
- Non-fictional texts and essays help readers develop analytical and persuasive capabilities

Example of text type
Narrative texts
Purpose
- To entertain, instruct or inform the reader by telling a story
- E.g. Visual Arts: Write a narrative about a painting,
- HSIE: Write a narrative about the life of the peasants in Medieval Europe
- English: Write a narrative featuring a hero and a villain
Language features
When writing a narrative you should:
- Use verbs
- Use time connectives to show order
- Use descriptive language
- Use proper nouns (e.g. Character Names)
Structure
Body
A series of paragraphs that move through three stages:
- Complication
- Series of events that move to a climax
- Resolution or temporary resolution
Example:
Suddenly they were bathed in a bright light. Coming from directly above...
Their first reaction was...
Then...
After their experiences...

Orientation
Gives the reader information about who was involved, what happened, where it happened and when it occured.
Example:
It was a dark and stormy night, two figures dressed in black walked swiftly along the road. The village clock struck midnight

Methods:
- Using questionnaire to measure respondents' response
- product/brand image was measured based on modernity, quality and price
