As an effect 350,000 people died because they didn't know what to do as they are uneducated, hadn't had an earthquake in 200 years and their houses collapsed, they had no water, they ate mud cakes to stop the stomach aches. They were in extreme poverty.

Housing in Haiti

Most houses are self built; made out of breeze blocks and scrap with no foundations or rules restricting height. Many houses are built on steep hillsides. The houses were built out of unreinforced concrete mixed with sea salt which weakened the concrete.
