Circulatory System
Functions
Transporting substances around the body. These include oxygen, glucose, carbon dioxide, nutrients, water and waste products.
-
Protecting the body. Blood contains cells and anti-bodies that fight infection and clotting agents to stop bleeding.
Features
Vein
Thin wall
Pump deoxygenated blood(blue) into heart
Carry blood at low pressure
2 veins connected to a heart
Blood with only wastes is received from artery
Wider lumen than artery
Capillarty
Very thin wall: thickness of a single cell can fit in
Allow substances like oxygen and CO2 to pass into and out to cells
Make oxygen and nutrients extracted
Send blood back to veins Carrying wastes
Artery
Thick muscular wall
Pump oxygenated blood away from the heart
Able to carry blood at high pressure
2 arteries connected to a heart
Blood goes to vein with only wastes
Narrow lumen

Types of injuries
Cuts and Grazes
Cuts
-
Treatment
Stops any bleeding by applying pressure to the area using a clean, dry absorbent material such as a bandage, towel or handkerchief. When the bleeding has stopped, clean the wound and cover it with a dressing.

Bruises
-
Treatment
Cold compressing such as a flannel or cloth soaked in cold water or an ice pack wrapped in a towel will help to reduce swelling and internal bleeding.
Description
Bluish or purple - coloured patches that appear on the skin when capillaries break or burst underneath. Blood leaks into the soft tissue under the skin, causing the discolouration.
Blisters
Causes
Repeated rubbing of the skin, e.g. on the foot where the shoe rubs against the heel.
Ex) Burning
Treatment
Unbroken blisters: don't pierce the bubble. Cover with a plaster or a gazed pad or depressing. Burst blisters' don't peel off the dead skin on top of the blister. Allow the fluid inside to drain and wash it with mild sop and water. Cover the area with a dry, sterile dressing to protect in from infection until it heals.
Decription
A small pocket of fluid that forms in the upper layer of skin after it has been damaged. Most blisters are filled with a clear fluid (serum), but many be filled with blood (blood blisters) or pus if inflamed or infeted.
Winding
Causes
A blow to the abdomen by a ball or hitting action, making the diaphragm go into spam.
Treatment
Loosen the clothing. it in a crouched position as this helps the muscles to relax. Try to stay calm and take slow deep breaths.

Heart
-
Feature
Heart consists four chambers. Two at the top are atria (singular form = atrium) and two at the bottom are ventricles. These two parts are separated with thick muscular wall called the septum. Septum ensures that the blood always flows in one direction.
