Rebuilding Kosovo's society and Economy
Kosovo's economy
Kosovo has a number of natural resources, mainly mineral deposits
Lignite
"brown coal" burned to generate electricity and natural gas as well as yields fertilizers
Greatest natural resource that Kosovo has
Provides over 90% of the country's electricity from its deposits
silver, zinc, nickel, chromium magnesite,
bauxite, lead
The mining of minerals was the backbone of the economy in the Yugoslav Federation
British investment in the previous century helped modernize the extraction process
the whole economy needed modernization though, infrastructure was outdated and Kosovo needed more direct investment inclusion into the wider European market
This led to Yugoslavia benefiting from Kosovo resources and giving little in return
The Kosovo economy is mainly geared for demand, not production leading it to using most of what it produces
Its trading partner's are its immediate neighbors in Europe such as Italy, Macedonia, and Albania
After the war the economy was still heavily based on agriculture, accounted for 80% of the output
Majority of the products form agriculture such as wheat, dairy and fruits were used by the Kosovars themselves, generated very little economic income
the post war economy became heavily dependent on foreign aid and the international community
Posr war reconstructions helped regrow the market and prorivoided a tempotary boom within the kosovo economy
After the war they used the German mark but then swapped to the euro to keep inflations rate low, however Serbian dinar is still used illegally in Serb provinces within the country
Unemployment is still very high in the country as of 2013, 45% of the country lived on less than 2 euros a day
Acts of Revenge
Serb and Roma minorities were targeted
Ethnic Albanians regarded them as complicit in the ethnic cleansing during the conflict
Homes were burned and looted, Orthodox churches and monasteries were destroyed and Serb and Roma minorities were displaced
Social consequence led to the restructuring of the Kosovo society
KLA were mainly responsible for the reprisals
End of Serb rule and Domination
Serbs and Serb institutions were predominant before the conflict such as the Serb media, tv, newspapers and the use of the Cyrillic alphabet
after the conflict, all of the mentioned things disappeared.
Majority of Serbs left the country, who were mainly urban Serbs, farming Serbs and the minority stayed as they had no where else to go
In the years following NATO victory, acts of random violence peppered areas of serb residence and there was more violence's in 2003 and 2004 towards minorities
Social Consquences and the refugee problem
Death toll
The Death toll was not accurately known and many diffrent numbers have sprung up in debate
During the war NATO officials suggested that 100,000 had been killed
in 2001, The ICTY surveyed a number of mass graves and said 4,300 bodies killed by Yugoslav troops
This number was added to by the Human Rights Watch and Red cross by another 3,500 casualties, including those missing
Recent estimates from 2008 suggest that more than 10,000 deaths, 800,000 fleeing the country
In Serbia, Government claimed NATO was responsible for the deaths of 500 people
The Ceaseifre did not bring an end to the killing or suffering felt within the region and in kosovo
What followed was a cleansing of a smaller scale
Serbs and Roma minority's felt the social consequences immediately
