1.5.2 Ethical Moral and Cultural Issues.
Computers Analysing Personal Information
Targeted Advertising
third party access to personal data
Can allow third party corporations and advertisers to build a profile on individual users
Selective Exposure
Individual profiling
It allows the internet to be personalised towards each person separately; you get ads tailored toward you specifically
An issue is that because all ads are tailored towards your preferences, no different products will be introduced to the customer. Hence, the consumer will be at a loss as they are not exposed to anything new
Data Mining
A fully automated process that looks at large set of data and tries to identify patterns in order to predict the users next move.
For example, when shopping on Amazon, after you add something to your basket it often gives you a suggested tab called "What other people bought with this product."
A benefit of data mining is that it can be used in science fields to analyse large groups of data.
For example, data mining was used by Harvard to find that a certain drug (rofecoxib) had harmful side-effects. They found this before the actual company distributing the drug had found out.
Data mining can be bad because of Privacy Issues. Often, many companies use data mining to narrow down their potential customers and serve the targeted advertisement. They often exploit the user's private information to gain personal benefits.
Personal data is sold by large companies
However this is illegal due to data protection laws
Data breaches can lead to millions of people's personal information being widely available
This easily opens the door for hackers to take over somebody's accounts almost everywhere - especially if they use the same password everywhere!
Some common types of risk are identity theft, discrimination and reputational damage to the people whose data has been breached.
Lack of privacy
Huge corporations are collecting as much data as possible from their users. Examples are Device IDs, locations, and personal information like birthdays.
Closed source software secretly collecting user info without the knowledge of the user.
Security of online databases are often dismal: various data breaches each year (e.g. Collection 1)
Social Media
Users enter personal info that other users can see
Companies can use this to filter the audience that sees their adverts :check:
Social media apps also gain access to the user's location so that it can be incorporated into a user's posts :red_cross: :check:
Despite only needing access to location while using the app, many people allow social medias to access their location at all times
Personal information can be beneficial for social networking as it is already shown on the user's account and potential employers can easily review this
