Censorship and Monitoring Behaviour
Ethical Issues
monitoring peoples activity online is a massive breach of peoples privacy
censoring content can stop people talking about their opinion/ideas or company and getting it out there this can be used in many different situations to stop small competitors succeeding, this could also lead to companies finiding it easier to push poltical agendas etc
Censoring people online can remove their freedom of speech
Security concerns since the information gathered by monitoring tools may be stolen and used for personal gain.
It has become considerably easier to monitor someone's activities online since social media has become so widespread.
Nationwide Censorship + Monitoring
Governments can censor opinions contrary to theirs, which prevents opposition and allows them to fake a narrative of complete support. For example North Korea's censorship of media outside the country helps to maintain their citizens' rampant nationalism
Some apps such as fitness apps or find my iphone will track your location and habits, which can be an issue with how they use your data.
This can be good but only if used in the correct way. For example picking up on a bad habit and suggesting how they could fix it to become healthier
Larger companies or the government keeping track of their users health is generally not a good idea due to the possibility of corruption, especially in business where there aren't many measures put in place to prevent it
Monitoring of a citizen's online activity means that the government can 'take out' people who's beliefs do not align with theirs. For example people in China 'going missing' after expressing opinions that go against those of the government
which will undermine the democratic systems we have in place
CCTV is very prominent in the UK, and it can be seen as an issue with surveillance ethics. surveillance monitoring has a reputation of being invasive and the surveillance industry has seen a lot of scrutiny because people believe this to be a very invasive method of monitoring.
However CCTV can capture moments which nobody can witness therefore providing great evidence for any crimes which will greatly reduce the amount of innocent people taken to courts and could make it easier to bring back heavier punishments
CCTV also acts as a deterrent to criminals as they know they're being watched and that recording can be admissible as evidence
Censorship works to control the flow of news. Censorship can be helpful when you’re trying to stop the flow of fake news across social media
Another advantage is that it is good for Underage Kids. The biggest advantage of internet censorship is protecting the rights of minors. Kids are not considered matured enough to choose what they see or what kind of content they access.
Facial recognition systems are already failing to identify criminals correctly. They are mistaking the culprit's face for a completely innocent person. In addition, people are scared of being constantly monitored.
Ethical positives
Censoring content can stop/remove harmful content from reaching people
it can make the internet a safer place
monitoring behaviour can keep track of people that may be doing illegal activity's and help bust some crime
can reduce the use and impact of hate speech and conflict online/ in society
protects peoples rights such as artists or inventors
limits the impact of identity theft
minimize copyright violations
Censorship in schools
Censorship in school can be seen though the use of a web filter to help focus students on work by restricting access to games and violent websites.
Some websites in schools are wrongly blocked which could be beneficial to subject learning
Censorship in the Workplace
Some companies will track work rate and websites visited to check productivity of workers
Being constantly watched can create a sense of un-nerve and paranoia for workers
Companies may block access to worker unions and help groups pushing for better working conditions. :red_cross::
Censorship of content needed for research may hinder ability to complete work efficiently. Tasks like research and development may not be as useful if product review sites or news sites are blocked on company network.
