The Origins of Psychology
The emergence of Psychology as a science:
Once known as as an experimental philosophy
Descartes - mind and bodies are separate entities
John Locke - Empiricism, can be studied scientifically
Charles Darwin - evolution, genetics became a part of psychology
What is meant by introspection:
Examination of one's own thought processes
First systematic experimental way of attempting to study the mind
Breaks down behaviours such as perception and sensation
Explain Wundt's contribution to the development of Psychology:
Established the first psychological lab in Germany (1875)
His experiments led to the discipline move from the realms of philosophy, biology and pysiology
'Father of Psychology'
Evaluation of the Scientific Approach in Psychology:
S - Causes of behaviour can be established through methods that are empirical and replicable
W - Contrived situations turn create artificial behaviours which don't reflect real life behaviour
Criticisms of introspection as a method of investigation:
Relies mainly on non-observable thought processes
Participants are unable to report on unconscious factors relating to their behaviour
Data was subjective - difficult to establish general principles
Criticism of Wundt's contribution:
Lack of reliability in his methods
Self reports - based on personal thoughts and feelings ( too subjective) therefore unreliable
