A few days later, congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which allowed Johnson to send in troops

This event helped escalate the war- by 1965, US spent $2million a day on the war, 184,000 US troops were stationed in Vietnam, both sides were devoted to a war they didn’t want and Johnson’s advisers were convinced the US could win the war.

He got involved for two reasons: the first was his belief in the domino theory (the idea that if one country turned communist, others surrounding would follow)
In 1954, Eisenhower established SEATO to help stop the spread of communism

Role of France

Kennedy
Also believed in limited war approach, focused on pacification (winning over local people through being peaceful), sent US special forces (green berets) to train villagers and agreed to help use chemical sprays to kill crops to see Vietcong hiding places
He also introduced Strategic Hamlets in 1962, which were large village areas that would protect villagers from the VC
These hamlets didn’t work as villagers didn’t want to leave their old homes and people went hungry as the government didn’t provide food
Ho Chi Minh

Used the Ho Chi Minh trail to transport troops, food and supplies to the Vietcong
Dien Bien Phu

The Vietminh won because they were familiar with the local area and people, had more troops (50,000 v 15,000) and had communist support from China and Soviet Union
