Origin of Humans
-
The story says that God made Adam using the soil and then breathed life into him, he was then given a job to be a steward of God's creation. God saw that Adam was lonely so created animals. He was still lonely so he created Eve out of one of Adam's ribs.
They were given the Garden of Eden to use but were given strict instructions not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
Some take it literally (fundamentalist) other look for a deeper meaning in the story, Evolution is possible
Use and Abuse of Animals
Christians
Animals were created by God for humans to both use and care for. Animals are not as important as humans. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Man is made in the image if God
Islam
Muslims believe that every animals is valuable to God so should be treated with kindness and compassion. The religion teaches that animals have been made for the benefit of humans but should not be abused. Animal cruelty must be avoided.
It is God who provides live-stock for you food, you have other benefits in them too.
Whoever kills a sparrow or anything bigger without just cause, God will hold him accountable on the Day of Judgment
Muhammad cut off part of his cloak rather than disturb a sleeping cat. Muhammad is seen as a role model in how he treated animals.

Evolution
-
Over a long period of time living organisms became more complex so where able to survive as the world changed.
-
Gene mutations give animals an advantage which increased their chance of survival, these advantages are then pass on to their offspring
-
-
-
Humans are no different from animals, we have the same purpose which is to survive and pass on our genes
Abortion
Roman Catholic Teaching
The Church teaches that human life is created and begins at the moment of contraception. The Catholic Church sees abortion as the termination of an unborn life and therefore, it's always wrong, sinful, and immoral, whatever the circumstances
-
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart
-
-
-
Muslim teaching
It is not permitted unless it is the lesser of two evils. This is similar to the Church of England teaching.
The later the abortion takes place the worst it is because there is more life as the baby gets older. In the first four months of pregnancy, the woman has greater rights than the foetus but that after this time they are ewual
Forbids the termination after the soul is given to the foetus. This is known as the ensoulment. Either 40 days or at 120 days.
Do not take life, which God has made sacred
-
Euthanasia
Muslim
It's haram (forbidden) in Islam. They believe in the sanctity of life - gift from God so must be valued. Only God can decide when a life should end.
Do not take life, which God has made sacred
God has a plan for everyone. When humans decide when life should end they have gone against God's will and interferes with God's plan
-
Types
Voluntary
When a person asks a doctor to end their life as they do not wish to live anymore. This is their own choice
Involuntary
When a person is able to provide consent but doesn't, either because they don't want to or because they are not asked
Non-voluntary
When the person is too ill to request to die, for example, they are in a coma, but the doctor will end their life for them
Christian
For
Some Christians support euthanasia if it is the most loving and compassion thing to do. This is supported by the teachings 'love your neighbour as yourself' and 'blessed are the merciful'. God has given people free will so they have the right to decide when they want to die
Against
Life is sacred so only God has the right to take it away. Goes against the sanctity of life.
It goes against the commandment - thou shall not kill
We cannot play God and decide when people die
It's wrong and should tale care of people in hospices, this gives people a chance to die with dignity
Forms
-
Passive
When doctors stop providing treatment or do something to quicken the natural process of dying e.g. turning off a life support machine
Sanctity vs Quality
Sanctity of Life - the belief that life is sacred because it is God given. God gives life so only God can take it away. Humans cannot play God and decide who lives and who dies
Quality of Life - the general well being of a person in relation to their health and happiness. The value of human life depends on how good or satisfying it is
