What is SNAP?
The national Syste of Protected Areas (SNAP in Spanish), is the group of natural protected areas that guarantee coverage and connectivity of important ecosystems in the terrestrial, marine and coastal levels of its natural resources
Marine Reserves - Their priority is the reservation of the ecosystems and marine species related to these surroundings
National Parks - Preservation areas of more than 10 000 hectares. Their objective is preserving the landscape, the complete ecosystem and their species. Activities and environmental monitoring are allowed
Flora and Fauna production reserves -
Areas of 5 000 and 10 000 hectares. Their objetive is the preservation of ecosystems and species. The human presence is related to the sustainble management of wilddlife, environmental education, the restoration of ecosystem and tourism

Biological Reserves - Areas of 10 000 hectares. Preservation of complete ecosystems and their species. Must be minimum human presence, activities wiil be biological ecological and enviromental research
Natural Areas - Areas that cover between 5 000 and 10 000 hectares.Purpose is to preserve the natural landscape.Activities such as tourism and recreation, the restoration of the ecosystems, research and environmental monitoring.
Geobotanical Reserves - These ares areas that provide recreational and educational opportunities to their visitors both national and foreign. Protect the natural state of the different ecosystems, landscape and exceptional geological formations
Wildlife Shelters - Conservation areas smaller than 5 000 and 10 000 hectares. Almost unaltered and with little human presence since its purpose is the preservation of species and their ecosystems. in Ecuador there are ten shelters
Ecological Reserves - Natural spaces of variable extension and little human intervention. They have outstanding human resources or species with great national significance. Preserve genetic material, ecologic diversity, landscape beauties and environmental regulation for scientific research and environmental education. Recreational and tourist activities.
